gconf-editor is a program designed to give the user access to the guts of the gconf database. gconf is a system for storing user preferences. All the data is stored in XML files in a directory called .gconf.

If you've ever played with the Windows Registry, gconf-editor should be familiar. The window is broken into two panes - one contains a tree view listing all the different settings categories. The other contains the actual settings, and a box that details the description (if any) of each setting.

When you change a setting in gconf-editor, the change is usually applied instantly.

gconf-editor will often let you change many more settings than the applications themselves do. This is to reduce the complexity of the applications. gconf-editor can be used to delve into the guts of your applications, and tweak them to just how you want them. However - be careful when changing things - unless you know what you're doing you could mess things up.
