If you use a background image that has transparency (eg, a PNG or GIF file), then the background colour will show through the transparent areas of the image - this is fantastic for creating background images that are colour-independent. If the file has an alpha channel then the alpha channel works as well. There are a couple of backgrounds on art.gnome.org that use this, and creating your own is pretty easy, The effect is stunning!
